Wait

The last couple of months, I have been feeling deeply defeated about a specific area of my life. I kept wondering when God was finally going to help me and pull through the way I had been praying for Him to.

And if I’m being honest, over the last few weeks, I could feel bitterness slowly trying to rise up inside of me.

Every time I would sit down to do my devotions or read Scripture, I would come across verses about God helping His people. And my immediate internal reaction, as painful as it is to admit, would sometimes be:

Yeah… right. He’s not helping at all.

I hated that those thoughts were even crossing my mind.

Every time they did, I would ask God to forgive me because deep down I knew they were coming from hurt and disappointment. But God already knew my heart anyway. He saw the sadness I was trying to pray through.

I started feeling like maybe God wasn’t really there for me because maybe I had somehow failed Him. And slowly, depression started creeping in.

Then this morning happened.

I was reading my daily devotional, and the key verse for the day was Micah 7:7:

“But as for me, I watch in hope for the Lord,
I wait for God my Savior;
my God will hear me.”

The word wait immediately hit me because it felt so personal to the season I’m in right now. So I decided to grab my Bible and turn to Micah so I could highlight the verse and come back to it later. I remember thinking, where is Micah again??

When I opened my Bible…

It opened DIRECTLY to Micah 7:7.

Exactly there.

And then I noticed something that completely broke me emotionally.

The bookmark sitting on that exact page had one word written on it:

WAIT.

The moment I saw it, tears filled my eyes.

Obviously, this was not random.

I knew God was embracing me in the middle of my hurt and quietly saying:

I have not abandoned you.
I have not forgotten you.
And I have not forgotten the promises I made over your life.

I leaned down, kissed my Bible, repetitively thanked Him and cried hard because for the first time in weeks, I felt seen again. And maybe that’s what waiting really is. Maybe waiting is not God withholding Himself from us. Maybe waiting is learning to trust that even in silence, He is still present.

Today, I believe God was reminding me that His silence is not abandonment.

And maybe someone reading this needs that reminder too.

If you are in a season of waiting, do not let bitterness convince you that God has forgotten you.

Sometimes He sends the gentlest reminders at the exact moment we need them most.

A verse.

A perfectly opened Bible.

A bookmark with one word.

Wait.

I loved reading this, Laura. I too, am in a season of waiting on an answer to something and needed this. I am praying with you and for you.

  2. As always, well done. Waiting is so hard for me as patience is not one of my strongest attributes. I have gotten so much better at not feeling like God’s timing is not managed as efficiently as I would like. Slowing my life down and waiting has made my life so much more peaceful and the only drama in my life is on my TV … when I want it!!
