Courage to Step Forward
Scripture:
“The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” (Exodus 14:14)
“Do not be afraid of them; the Lord your God himself will fight for you.” (Deuteronomy 3:22)
“For the battle is not yours, but God’s.” (2 Chronicles 20:15)
At my nephew Diego’s fourth birthday party, the theme was Star Wars. All the little boys were running around with toy lightsabers, laughing and shouting. But then came the moment: my dad, Diego’s Papa, emerged in a full head-to-toe Darth Vader costume. The mask, the cape, the deep voice, the lightsaber, it was all there.
The boys froze. One by one, their lightsabers clattered to the ground as they screamed and bolted for cover. Every single one of them was terrified… except Diego.
Without hesitation, Diego stepped forward. With all the confidence in the world, he twirled his little plastic lightsaber, ready to face down Darth Vader himself. And here’s the amazing part, when the other boys saw Diego’s courage, they picked their lightsabers back up and joined the fight. Suddenly Darth Vader was surrounded by a swarm of fearless four-year-olds, all because one child stood his ground.
That moment takes me straight to the story of David and Goliath. The Israelite army had been paralyzed by fear, staring at the giant and wondering what to do. Then David arrived, a shepherd boy armed with only a sling and a few stones, and declared with full assurance that God would give him victory. His confidence didn’t come from himself, it came from knowing the Lord was on his side.
Take Away:
Sometimes life brings us face to face with giants; addiction, fear, sickness, heartbreak, impossible odds. Like the Israelite army, we can feel frozen, unsure how to move. But God calls us to courage. He promises that the battle isn’t ours to win alone. He fights for us.
Like Diego stepping toward Darth Vader, or David stepping toward Goliath, we can face our battles with confidence, not because we’re strong, but because the Almighty God stands behind us. And when we step forward in faith, we might just inspire others to pick up their lightsabers, too.
Reflection:
- What giant are you facing right now that feels overwhelming?
- Do you believe God is fighting for you in that very place?
- How could your courage encourage others around you to be brave?
